Abyss Eye
Pitch Black
Abyss Eye (M5) released in Japan on 22 May 2026, centred on Mega Darkrai ex — the first time Darkrai has received the Mega evolution treatment. The English edition, Pitch Black (ME5), follows on 17 July 2026.
Abyss Eye (M5) launched in Japan on 22 May 2026 with Mega Darkrai ex as the headline pull. The 118-card set — 81 base cards plus 37 AR/SR/SAR/MUR chase slots — introduced the MUR (Mega Ultra Rare) rarity for the first time: a gold-foil treatment distinct from both the standard SAR and the EN UR tier. The SAR illustration of Mega Darkrai was by Akira Egawa, widely regarded as the standout art of the Mega era so far. Secondary chase pulls include Mega Zeraora ex SAR, Mega Chandelure ex SAR, Morpeko ex SAR, and two Trainer SARs — Gladion's Fighting Spirit (part of a connected-art pair with Silvally) and Gwynn. The English edition, Pitch Black, arrives on 17 July 2026.
Chase Pulls

The centrepiece of Abyss Eye. Akira Egawa's Mega Darkrai ex SAR is the first Mega evolution treatment for the Pitch-Black Pokémon — the nightmare legendary that defined the Gen IV mythical roster. The illustration renders Mega Darkrai in near-absolute black with pale crescent and blue-void energy effects, described by collectors as "eldritch horror done right." As the headline SAR of a Mega set by one of the era's most celebrated artists, it follows the high-price trajectory of Mega Gengar ex and Mega Charizard X ex. EN pricing being established post-July release.

The MUR (Mega Ultra Rare) is a new rarity designation introduced in Abyss Eye — a gold-foil treatment distinct from both the SAR and the UR gold stamp seen in earlier sets. The Mega Darkrai MUR (118/081) is the highest-numbered and rarest card in the set, pairing the gold foil surface with Mega Darkrai's void-black palette for a striking visual contrast. For collectors who tracked the ME2 MHR Charizard X as the most emotionally resonant secondary pull, the MUR Darkrai is likely to occupy a similar position in this set.

Mega Zeraora ex SAR (112/081) is the secondary legendary pull in Abyss Eye. Zeraora's Electric-type design — pale yellow and blue with exposed muscle anatomy — contrasts sharply with Darkrai's void palette, giving the set visual range. Zeraora appeared in Pokémon Unite and has a dedicated competitive fanbase; its first Mega treatment is expected to perform solidly above the secondary SAR floor. EN pricing TBA.

Mega Chandelure ex SAR (113/081) is the Ghost/Fire pull in Abyss Eye's upper chase tier. The chandelier Pokémon's blue flames and haunted atmosphere are a natural fit for a set built around darkness — the SAR illustration gives Mega Chandelure the grand, candelabra-scale treatment its design demands. Chandelure has a strong collector fanbase from the Unova era and this is its first Mega SAR treatment. Pricing still settling.

Morpeko ex SAR (115/081) is the set's surprise inclusion — the tiny Hunger Switch Pokémon elevated to Special Art Rare alongside the Mega legends. Morpeko's dual-form nature (Full Belly and Hangry Mode) gives illustrators split-personality material that the SAR format handles well. A lower-price anchor in the ME5 chase pool but a popular collector target for fans of the Galar-era Pokémon.

Gladion's Fighting Spirit SAR (116/081) forms a connected art pair with the Silvally AR (093/081) — the two cards join together to depict Gladion and his signature partner in a single illustration that spans both cards. Gladion — the brooding rival from Alola, son of Lusamine, and canonical partner of Type: Null / Silvally — has a substantial following among Sun and Moon fans. A connected-art Trainer SAR is one of the most collectible formats in modern Pokémon TCG; demand for both halves of the pair is expected to be strong.

Gwynn SAR (117/081) is a Trainer card for the Gym Leader character introduced in the Legends: Z-A storyline, consistent with the dark/gothic aesthetic of Abyss Eye. As one of two Trainer SARs in the set alongside Gladion, her price trajectory will depend on Western reception at the July EN release. The character has received strong early engagement from collectors who followed the Legends: Z-A storyline. Pricing TBA.
Edition Notes
Abyss Eye (M5) is the Japanese domestic release of 22 May 2026. The set introduced the MUR (Mega Ultra Rare) rarity alongside the standard SAR tier — Mega Darkrai receives both an SAR (114/081) and an MUR (118/081) treatment, giving collectors two distinct visual interpretations of the headline pull. The 81-card base set expands to 118 with AR, SR, SAR and MUR slots. Shadow Energy and Bolt Lightning Energy are the special energy cards. A fossil sub-theme runs through the set anchored by Rampardos ex and Mega Excadrill ex, alongside a strong Ghost/Dark core. The Gladion's Fighting Spirit SAR (116/081) forms a connected art pair with the Silvally AR (093/081).
Pitch Black (ME5) releases internationally on 17 July 2026. As with previous Mega EN editions, the EN roster is expected to expand on the JP 118-card base. EN card numbering will diverge past 118. The EN release follows the JP print by 56 days — a shorter-than-average JP-to-EN window that should keep pricing pressure elevated heading into the EN launch.
