Chaos Rising launch deconstructed — what UK collectors should take into Pitch Black
The 22 May launch was a fast sell-through across UK retail. Here's how the allocation actually played out — and the playbook worth carrying into the Pitch Black drop on 17 July.
Chaos Rising (ME4) hit UK retail on 22 May 2026. Anecdotal reports across collector communities suggest it was one of the quicker Mega era sell-throughs — Pokémon Center UK's allocation cleared on launch morning, and high-street allocations were thinner than for ME3. Three days later, MSRP sealed product is hard to find across mainstream UK retail.
Mega Greninja ex was always going to be the most anticipated Mega pull since Charizard X, so the speed of sell-through is not a surprise. The interesting question is what worked tactically — and which routes are worth queuing for again when Pitch Black drops on 17 July.
What worked
Collectors who reported securing sealed product at MSRP came from three identifiable routes, all of which have track records across earlier Mega releases.
Chaos Cards' pre-order lottery, opened in the weeks before launch and fulfilled on release day. The lottery system has now successfully allocated across multiple consecutive Mega era sets; it is the most reliable single route to MSRP sealed product in the UK and a quietly significant moat the retailer is building.
Pokémon Center UK's Thursday morning drop. Both the booster bundle and the ETB sold through quickly. Reports from collectors suggest pre-saved payment and a direct SKU URL were the difference between making it through checkout and not — the homepage navigation path was too slow for the window available.
In-store Smyths Toys allocations on launch day. This is the route most underestimated by online-first collectors. Branch managers receive small quantities of headline ETBs at launch and these are often available to early walk-ins. The catch: stock varies branch to branch and there's no reliable way to confirm in advance.
What didn't work
Argos pre-orders. Argos' pricing was honoured but online allocation arrived later in the launch week. By the time the SKU went live the wider secondary market had already moved above MSRP. Argos remains a strong post-launch restock source — typically more reliable than Pokémon Center UK for the second wave — but is no longer the day-one play for headline Mega sets.
Amazon UK marketplace listings. As expected, third-party seller listings were above MSRP within the first day of launch. Listings that briefly appeared at MSRP were generally not Amazon-fulfilled and carry the usual marketplace risks. Not a competitive route on launch.
Stock-tracking browser alerts on Pokémon Center UK. Alert latency is the structural problem with polling-based tools at launch — by the time the notification fires, the SKU has already cleared. These tools remain useful for restocks of existing SKUs; they are not competitive for the initial drop window on net-new releases.
The lesson for Pitch Black
Pitch Black (ME5) will likely compress this window further. Mega Darkrai ex is a stronger headline than Mega Greninja for two reasons: Akira Egawa's illustration is the most-shared SAR reveal of the Mega era to date, and the new MUR rarity introduces a second collectible tier above the SAR that increases per-box chase value.
Concretely: enter the Chaos Cards lottery the day it appears. Save payment to your Pokémon Center UK account well before July, not on launch morning. Identify your nearest Smyths Toys branch and plan to be there at opening. These three steps cover the three reliable MSRP routes; everything else is noise.
The secondary market floor on Pitch Black sealed is likely to sit above MSRP from day one. Plan accordingly.
